The Ideal Writing Space

I’ll be honest. When I’m stuck on a scene or where to go next with a story, I research or work on something else. That’s how I take a break to go back to the story with a fresh mind. This weekend as I took a break from writing, I had writer’s block, tips and tricks, and the space in which one writes.

So, where is the best place to sit and work? This seems to be the million-dollar question for successful work from home employees, writers, and essentially everyone during a pandemic. Is the desk free and clear of all distractions? A minimalist take? Or is it a desk prepared with all the things one needs, pens, pencils, highlighters, whiteout, sticky notes, stapler, tape, and a cup of coffee or tea?

On a side note, this seems to be a great way to understand a person’s psychology. For example, my fiancé prefers to only have his laptop and monitor on his desk. Maybe a pen and paper if he really needs it, but even the coffee sometimes is regulated to the side, so there is no risk of spilling. Work is always done at the desk. He’s an engineer that loves modern minimalist sleek designs.

On the other hand, I now have a shelf next to the desk to store all my pens, pencils, sticky notes, and different miscellaneous needs for working from home. I also can’t sit in the same spot for eight hours at home and not go crazy without switching it up and sitting on a chair or couch or desk or the dining room table. I also spread out like crazy. Sometimes I even work from the floor to be surrounded by all of the ideas, plotting, study material, etc.

The only conclusion I can reach is… write, work, and create where ever feels right for you. Each person is different and each day is different. Thus knowing your abilities plays a role in where is best for you to work.
