Weather in books always sets the scene. When you can hear the thunder of storms or your mouth goes dry with the heat of the desert. That can make or break a book. But when you’ve heard the fifth iteration of sunlight on a dappling leaf to describe a sunny day, it’s a little much.
Weather is such a great timekeeper in a story. One can showcase the passing of days by discussing how rainy days blur together. Show the change from day to night. Even geographic changes from mountains to lush rainforests to deserts.
Why the ramble on the weather? Well, as our March weather comes in like a lion with our first tornado warning of the year and more rain than last year, it’s genuinely one of my favorite times. The weather is unpredictable and changing. The energy from good solid thunderstorms is the perfect tea, blanket, and book weather. But it also has me thinking as I slowly work towards my writing goals, what makes good weather writing?
So what are some of your favorite weather descriptions from books? Any over used ones you don’t like?
