Removing Filler Dialogue

Before diving into repetitive character dialogue it would be important to go over a starting point. I’m dividing dialogue editing into two parts. Personally I like to start with making sure cutting filler dialogue.

Filler dialogue looks like this:

“Hello.”

“Hello.”

“How are you?”

“Good, how are you?”

That basic exchange I have with people and good friends in most of my daily conversations is perhaps the most boring exchange of dialogue in writing. It can usually receive a big red X in editing. If the same exchange happens with every character it can start to take up space and imply there is no difference between characters.

What are some examples of filler dialogue you’ve seen in your writing or reading?
